Duo Haqolot

Haqolot – Hebrew for ‘the voices’ – is a vocal duo specialising in ostracised music. This music, composed by Jewish and politically persecuted composers during the Nazi era, was banned in its day and has now largely been forgotten. The duo, comprising singer Anna Langner and pianist and arranger Cornelius Rauch, combines classical songs, jazz and chansons with texts and literature from the first half of the 20th century. A recital that touches the heart, tells a story and spreads hope in an accessible way.

Drawing on extensive research in the archives of the City of The Hague, collaboration with the Centre for Banned Music in Schwerin, and a keen interest in history and culture, the duo has compiled a rich repertoire. This repertoire includes songs from ghettos and concentration camps, such as the traditional song “Unter dayne vayse shtern” (Sutzkever/Brudno), as well as music from exile, from flight and from hiding. Artists in hiding, such as Dick Kattenburg and Rosy Wertheim, used music as a means of perseverance in the daily reality of the Second World War.

However, the repertoire also includes music that was composed before the Nazi era and which was banned from 1933 onwards.

However diverse this music may be in terms of style and content, the songs all have one thing in common: they were banned and, sadly, have now largely been forgotten, along with the stories behind them.

Violin soloist brings the audience to their feet

Bückeburg Palace: Standing ovations for the "Amadeus" Radio Chamber Orchestra in the middle of a special concert

Bückeburg. Around 60 enthusiastic spectators warmly received a concert by the Polish "Amadeus" Radio Chamber Orchestra from Poznań. The concert took place a few days ago at Bückeburg Palace. It was organised by the new cultural and music association Big Bands Company (BBC) Schaumburg. "Thanks to the permission of the lord of the palace and his organisation team, we managed to bring this world-famous radio chamber orchestra to Bückeburg within just four weeks," said BBC chairman Lutz Müller with delight. Even though the auditorium was not completely full, the audience were left thoroughly enchanted that evening. In letters to the association, some concert-goers expressed their thanks in kind words: "Such a beautiful concert — the sound of the wonderful violin played by Veriko Tchumburidze brought tears to my eyes," one listener later wrote by email to the organisers.

The soloist Veriko Tchumburidze won over all the listeners in the palace's banqueting hall with her 270-year-old Guadagnini violin from Milan. She played the famous Solo Concerto No. 2 in D minor by Henryk Wieniawski and sparkled with perfect runs and an incredibly touching dynamism in consummate harmony with the chamber orchestra. Immediately after her performance, the audience were swept to their feet: standing ovations in the middle of the concert.

In a short interview, the soloist revealed that she began learning the instrument at the age of three and a half with her mother's help. The highly gifted 29-year-old Georgian soloist has held a teaching post at the Munich University of Music for two years and intends to take German citizenship shortly. In her career, one highlight follows another: next week, for instance, she will play Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" at a concert in Turkey. Afterwards, she will have various concert engagements across Europe.

Equally interesting is the life of conductor Anna Duczmal-Mróz, who also began learning to play the violin at the age of six, likewise with her mother, and later discovered her talent as a conductor during her studies in Hanover. The "Amadeus" Chamber Orchestra had been on a tour of Japan, New Zealand and Australia just two and a half weeks earlier and brought the experiences from that tour to Bückeburg with a palpable and audible enthusiasm, performing works by the best-known Polish composers Karol Szymanowski, Henryk Wieniawski, Mieczysław Karłowicz and Wojciech Kilar, whose fast-paced and dynamically refined closing piece "Orawa" was presented in rousing fashion. Only after three encores was the orchestra allowed to set off on its journey home to Poznań. Because of the Agritechnica trade fair in Hanover, it had not been possible to find a hotel for the musicians. To sweeten this journey home, all the musicians were presented with a "Merci" chocolate package as a farewell, which orchestra members and audience alike received with laughter and applause.

The musicians themselves had already been delighted by the beautiful ambience of the palace during the sound check: "We haven't played in such a beautiful hall for a long time," they all rejoiced. Normally, one does not get such a high-quality orchestra in small towns like Bückeburg. They usually play in Berlin, Paris, Tokyo, London or New York. Thanks to support from the Polish government and the Greater Poland Voivodeship, as well as support from European funds, the concert in Bückeburg was able to be financed, Müller reported.

The BBC Schaumburg cultural and music association looks forward to further collaboration with the "Amadeus" orchestra, which is now to be established. "Details will be negotiated in the coming months," the BBC chairman assured.

Press Release

Peace Concerts 2025

Peace Concerts 2025

Saturday/Sunday, 25 and 26 October:

Two days for peace – music as a bridge between people

Concept and objectives:

The Peace Concerts 2025 in the Schaumburg region are intended as a musical sign for understanding, tolerance and hope. At a time when social cohesion and global peace are repeatedly put to the test, music as a universal language will bring together people of every age and every background. The aim is to experience the unifying power of music through a moving, moderated programme and the participation of three different ensembles, and to set a clear sign for peace.

Organisation:

The planning, organisation and execution are undertaken by the non-profit association "Big Bands Company Schaumburg e.V." – BBC Schaumburg for short – which was founded only in November 2024. According to its statutes, the association sees itself as a cultural association with a focus on music. In future, however, the association also wishes to work creatively across cultures, attempting, for example, to combine music and dramatic performance (theatre), concerts and dance in a way that is new to the Schaumburg region. BBC Schaumburg currently has one new orchestra formation, presently numbering 34 members, which has already given two concerts, in December 2024 and April 2025: the BBC Schaumburg Philharmonics Orchestra – Schaumburg Phili "O" for short. The orchestra consists for the most part of trained musicians, music teachers, music students or committed amateurs with many years of instrumental experience. It is led professionally by José Pascual García Llopis, who completed his master's degree at the Hanover University of Music in 2024 with top marks. He works full-time as a tuba player in the Federal Police Orchestra Hanover. In his spare time, the 33-year-old native of Spain conducts the Bückeburger Jäger wind orchestra and the orchestra of the town of Langenhagen. He is also undergoing training and further education as a conductor in masterclasses in Spain.

In addition, two further formations are to be established within BBC Schaumburg in the coming months: the Schaumburg Philharmonics Salon Orchestra – Schaumburg Phili "Salon" for short. And the Schaumburg Philharmonics Big Band – Schaumburg Phili "BB" for short.

Programme: The musical programme spans an arc from "classical" modern choral literature ("Benedictus" from Karl Jenkins's "Mass for Peace") through orchestral works such as "In a Persian Market" to modern (film) compositions (a medley from Disney's animated films "Frozen" as well as the song "When You Believe" from "The Prince of Egypt", sung in English, French and Hebrew) and peace songs such as "Gabriellas Sång" from the Scandinavian film "As It Is in Heaven". The choirs and orchestra will make music together, but will also present some pieces individually as their own group.

Works are planned that are both thought-provoking and yet inspire hope, and that reflect the diversity of musical forms of expression. A joint finale with the "Ode to Joy" (the European anthem) involving all the ensembles will set the emotional closing point. The audience will (hopefully) also join in singing at least the refrain. In this way, audience and performers alike are invited by these concerts to join together in working for a peaceful future. In Bückeburg, we shall endeavour to grant up to 100 children and young people, unaccompanied by adults, free admission to the dress rehearsal BEFORE the concert, so that they can take part as listeners in order to awaken further interest in large-scale choral work supported by an orchestra. This group will then be supervised by two social pedagogues experienced in youth work, specifically for a set period of no more than 2 hours.

Framework and special features:

Patronage: District Administrator Jörg Farr is taking on the patronage, thereby underlining the social relevance of the project. He will be present at the concert in Bückeburg.

Interval refreshments: At the concert in Stadthagen, finger food and drinks will be offered during the interval. For the concert in Bückeburg, interval catering is still being sought. This creates space for encounter and exchange between guests, musicians and organisers.

Sense of community: Through the involvement of different generations and the selection of works, an atmosphere of openness and solidarity is created.

Participants

alongside the orchestra: BBC Schaumburg Philharmonics Orchestra

are the two vocal formations: the chamber choir Cantemus Bückeburg and the Schaumburg Youth Choir.

Both choirs, based in Bückeburg, are conducted by Steffi Feindt. She studied singing at the Hanover University of Music and has many years of experience as a singing teacher, not only at the Musikschule Ostkreis Hannover and the Kreisjugendmusikschule of the Schaumburg district, but also as a vocal pedagogue at Stagecoach Performing Arts Germany. Her two Schaumburg choirs are internationally experienced and, alongside European friendships, also maintain choral contacts with music lovers overseas. For instance, the Schaumburg Youth Choir is planning a choir trip to choral friends in Canada for autumn 2026. Besides the youth choir, the chamber choir Cantemus, limited to 16 members, is also a regular guest at the a cappella days in Hanover. Two years ago, the choir was also permitted to sing in Rome as part of a Holy Mass led by the then Pope.

This multifaceted line-up of orchestra and choirs brings together professional musicians, committed choir members and the voices of the younger generation. In this way, a cross-generational soundscape emerges that stands for the spirit of reconciliation and renewal.

Dates and venues

Saturday, 25 October 2025 – Stadtkirche Bückeburg, 6.30 p.m. (admission: 6 p.m.)

Sunday, 26 October 2025 – Martinikirche Stadthagen, 4 p.m. (admission: 3.30 p.m.)

-> With their special atmosphere and acoustics, both churches provide a worthy setting for the concert experience.

Public relations:

The events will be publicised through the press, social media and regional networks in order to reach a wide audience. Following the events, the plan is to make very short video clips or photographs available online, thereby helping to promote the message of peace.

Sustainability:

Throughout the entire project phase – both this year and from 2026 to 2028 – every effort will be made to ensure sustainability: for example, rechargeable LED desk lamps will be used, as will LED spotlights for the stage set-ups; car-sharing arrangements will be organised; and catering will be sourced from the local area.

Conclusion:

The 2025 Peace Concerts provide a framework for bringing music to life as a bridge between people and cultures. They invite us to pause, reflect and share in hope – carried by sound, community and the unconditional desire for peace.

Outlook:

The concerts are also specifically intended to serve as organisational preparation for a major orchestral and choral project in the Schaumburg region between 2026 and 2028, aimed at all generations: We then intend to perform a ‘classical’ orchestral and choral programme together, for example featuring works such as the ‘Polovtsian Dances’ from ‘Prince Igor’ or ‘Finlandia’, or possibly the complete ‘Mass for Peace’ by Karl Jenkins.

Choral work of this kind is virtually unattainable for dedicated young and experienced choristers alike in the ‘flat countryside’ here in the Lower Saxony region bordering North Rhine-Westphalia. This new music and cultural initiative aims to change this fundamentally, with the medium-term goal of developing and performing concert programmes particularly suitable for radio and television broadcast.

Jazz meets Filmmusik - Duo Unico

Spring Concert St. Martini Church Stadthagen

The concert at St Martin’s Church in Stadthagen was a resounding success. The Romantic classics delighted both the audience and the musicians.

Presenter Lutz Müller promises the following for the inaugural spring concert of the newly founded BBC Schaumburg Philharmonics: “Our conductor, José Pascual García Llopis, has put together a fantastic programme. We’ll be playing some of the Romantic era’s most catchy tunes: Offenbach’s ‘Can-Can’, Grieg’s ‘Solveig’s Song’, Tchaikovsky’s ballet music, Brahms’s ‘Hungarian Dances’ and much more besides. During the interval, the confirmation candidates from the Martini parish will be serving refreshments. We look forward to welcoming a large audience and to donations at the exit. Shall we see you there?”

The 34-piece orchestra is the first ensemble of the new music and cultural association ‘Big Bands Company Schaumburg e.V.’ – or ‘BBC Schaumburg e.V.’ for short. In addition to this orchestra, the ‘BBC Schaumburg Salon Orchestra’ and the ‘BBC Schaumburg Big Band’ are set to be formed shortly. ‘BBC Schaumburg e.V.’ organises concerts and cultural events in the Schaumburg region in collaboration with fellow musicians and choirs, as well as other cultural practitioners such as artists, actors and dancers. A particular focus is on collaboration with music pupils, music students and musicians from the Schaumburg region and neighbouring areas. The ‘Noise of Schaumburg’ cultural programme marks the launch of a new series of events in Stadthagen.

Here is what the Schaumburger Nachrichten had to say about the new concert series ‘Noise of Schaumburg’:

A-Cappella-Music-Comedy with "Ferrari-Küsschen"

“Where’s the piano?” – this question is usually asked by burly men who are supposed to be transporting the keyboard instrument. The turbo-slow a cappella show by “Ferrari Küsschen” often finds that, of all places, there’s no piano where you’d expect one to be. Reason enough to sing “without” one, for all they’re worth.

However, the longing for a pianoforte takes on a flamboyant life of its own and runs like a recurring gag through the evening, featuring well-known melodies and quirky, comical German lyrics: Pharrell Williams, portrayed by Ferrari Küsschen as a grumpy morning person, doesn’t seem particularly happy. Matt Bianco waits with his husband for half a minute at a time for his wife to arrive, re-enacting typical scenes from married life. On a ‘Night like this’, Olga meets a number of rather odd companions along life’s journey. Unfortunately, however, he doesn’t have the faintest clue about music and therefore stands no chance with her.

Al Jarreau, Aretha Franklin, Bruno Mars, George Michael, even Supertramp, AC/DC and Frank Zappa take turns on stage in ‘Ferrari Küsschen’, always performed by five voices, accompanied instrumentally only by a touch of mischief.

All the song lyrics are in German, mostly thoroughly parodied, though on rare occasions simply skilfully translated. They tell whimsical stories from everyday life, offer well-meaning advice on ‘down-below whoopee’ or poke fun at SUVs being used as prams. Anyone who’s afraid of the dentist won’t, unfortunately, be able to shake off that fear with ‘Ferrari Küsschen’ – quite the opposite, in fact. Anyone already familiar with the a cappella group’s sophisticated vocal arrangements will be able to savour the many extra treats in the form of the icing on the cake.

A relaxed, almost family-like atmosphere, brilliant voices, sophisticated arrangements and a highly skilful balancing act between art and comedy – that’s how the performance has been rated so far. The “Ferrari Küsschen” have been performing on German cabaret stages since 1994. Thanks to this long-standing stage experience, the three female and two male singers skilfully weave a common thread through a programme that is by turns hilariously funny and laced with subtle wit. ‘Ferrari Küsschen’ will be performing on Sunday 16 February in the Le-Theule-Saal at the Old Town Hall in Bückeburg at 5 pm. Tickets are available in Bückeburg at the Hofapotheke and the Frommhold bookshop, and in Stadthagen at the Schmidt bookshop.
